Many local nonprofits have expressed a need for more volunteers. Elsie Terao, from left, Jackie Lindon, and Gary Hodges, pack up gelatin cups on Friday at the Meals on Wheels in Longmont. “People who normally give thousands gave a hundred, and people who normally give a hundred didn’t give anything,” she said. Wiser said at the donor mailing this spring, the individual donation total was a quarter of what it should have been. In shaky economic climates, Wiser said donations to charitable organizations are what people drop from their budgets first. She attributes this in part to “COVID burnout” and to uncertainty about where the economy is heading. “Volunteers who, pre-COVID, were taking one-weeklong vacations, are now taking one-monthlong vacations,” Wiser said.Ĭorporate donations are steady, but individual donations are an issue, too, Wiser said. Similar to Boulder Meals on Wheels, once COVID subsided, many of those volunteers decided to take extended time off. Wiser said the volunteers that stayed with Longmont Meals on Wheels through the pandemic rarely took breaks and frequently stepped up to cover for other volunteers. “During COVID, we had to change our operations and how we were doing things so we could minimize any potential risk of COVID exposure,” said Development and Communications Director Katie Wiser. The nonprofit is currently seeking volunteers to make deliveries, help in the kitchen, and be on call to substitute. “The summer is traditionally more challenging anyway because people are gone, but last summer and the summer before, nobody was going anywhere, so it was easier.”Ī few miles to the north, Longmont Meals on Wheels provides over 400 meals a day to Longmont and Niwot residents. “It’s been a challenge with so much travel and people being gone,” she said. Some nonprofit representatives attribute seeing less volunteers to people who helped consistently during the pandemic needing a break. Volunteer Trudi Foreman hands off a bag of meals to be delivered at the Boulder Meals on Wheels on Sept. This summer in particular has been problematic for onboarding new volunteers, said Hughes. Hughes said the nonprofit has Boulder “segmented out” into routes, and volunteers generally stick to their designated routes in order to save time. At the moment, the nonprofit has between 350 and 400 volunteers.ĭrivers are a critical part of Meals on Wheels’ operations and are needed most urgently.
